Axum in Northern Ethiopia was the center for many years
of the Christian religion in Ethiopia. Axum was the first
place where the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was located
after the conversion of King Ezana in the 4th century AD.
From Axum this belief spread further among the
population.
This is a triptych with religious scenes carved in relatively soft stone from the Axum area. Coptic crosses and various saints are depicted in the white stone.
These kinds of triptychs were made for believers for a
type of home altar. This example is about 50 years old.
