Axum in Northern Ethiopia was the center for many years

of the Christian religion in Ethiopia. Axum was the first

place where the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was located

after the conversion of King Ezana in the 4th century AD.

From Axum this belief spread further among the

population. 

This is a triptych with religious scenes carved in relatively soft stone from the Axum area. Coptic crosses and various saints are depicted in the white stone.

These kinds of triptychs were made for believers for a

 type of home altar. This example is about 50 years old.

Dimensions: 10 x 15 x 2 cm. (lxhxd) unfolded 20 cm wide.

 

This diptych is carved in dark, fairly hard stone, which is

found in the area around Axum.

Axum is located in Northern Ethiopia and has been an

important city since the 4th century the religious center

of the Christian Orthodox church in Ethiopia.

The icon consists of a front and back with each

1 single representation of angel figures. Open

the inside contains 8 smaller representations in which

elements of religious stories are depicted.

Het betreft hier een huisaltaar in de vorm van

een kerkgebouw, zoals die in de rotsen werden

uitgehakt voor religieuze vieringen. Het object

is gemaakt van Axum steen en heeft 4 deurtjes

die uitgeklapt kunnen worden. Op de buitenzijde

en de binnenkant van deze deurtjes staan koptische

kruisen en heiligen uitgesneden in de de steen.

This sturdy tableau is made of a kind of soapstone light in color, found in the surroundings of Axum.

A religious story is depicted on it, both on the front and back.
It shows a kind of Sacrifice feast.
It's a thick piece of stone and quite heavy.
